Youth Disconnection during the COVID-19 Pandemic

This paper studies the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on youth disconnection—i.e., share young people who were neither in school nor at work. Youth disconnection offers important advantages, relative to unemployment or participation rates, as a measure labor market for most marginal and disadvantaged youth. Before pandemic, approximately one out eight between ages 18 24 disconnected. The rate increased dramatically April 2020 because pandemic; however, it has decreased quickly since that time. increase beginning was mostly driven by reduction full-time work, but toward end 2020, enrollment also fell. Within-individual transition analysis reveals drove some individuals disconnection, regardless whether those persons school, already Full-time workers saw largest disconnection. Compared 2007 recession, full-time-work more during this pandemic.
